Dogs in Hot Cars

Going out in the car?  If it’s a warm day (even if it’s not sunny) think twice about what you are going to do with your dog.

Spirit.

Spirit.

It can get unbearably hot inside a car, even though it may not seem that hot outside in a breeze.  A temperature of 22 degrees C (72 degrees F) outside the car can rocket to a dangerous 47 degrees C (117 degrees F) inside the car within an hour.

Unluke humans, dogs pant to help keep themselves cool.  In a hot car dogs can’t cool themselves down – leaving a window cracked open or a sun-shield on your windscreen won’t keep your car cool enough.

Check that your destination is dog-friendly – you don’t want your day out to be ruined.

Under the Animal Welfare Act, you have a legal duty to care for your animals, and if you put them at risk you could face prosecution.  You would then have to live with the fact that your thoughtlessness resulted in terrible suffering for your pet.
