Cookie went to the vets 2 days ago, and it was planned to return on Friday if the infection from his head wound hadn’t gone down. However, yesterday morning it had swollen up like a marble, and Cookie was looking very sorry for himself, so we had another trip to see Uncle Andrew at Donaldsons Vets. Fortunately they weren’t too busy and Andrew was able to drain the abscess under anaesthetic, pack it with antibiotics and we picked him up just after lunch. He was pleased to get home and ate his tea, but being an independent cat, he wouldn’t stay in the house and went out with his brother Biscuit, cousin Felix, and nephew Whisper into their heated shed for the night.

My neighbour, who breeds cats, saw him systematically spraying in the front gardens around the corner from us. Even neutered cats can spray for territorial reasons and if a new cat has been on the scene, he may have felt that he needed to assert his dominance. Unfortunately the intruder wasn’t deterred and poor Cookie got badly beaten up. I am now seriously thinking of making a larger pen cat-proof so that I have somewhere safe for my cats to go during the day. They might not appreciate it, but they will be safer. […]
