Cyda’s puppies eating and drinking well

Cyda

Cyda

Cyda’s puppies are now able to feed themselves – Burns Mini Bites, soaked in warm water until soft and mushy.  They can also lap.  Cyda has done really well for them, and still likes to go in to them occasionally, but the puppies chase her round the pen until she relents and allows them to feed.  Now that all the puppies have teeth as sharp as needles, that is not a pleasant experience for Cyda, so I am using crystals from Charles Barrett‘s invaluable Birthing Pack of homoeopathic medications, to help her lose her milk, so she can start to regain her strength.  Her coat is coming out in handsful, but that, as any mother will know, is what babies do to you.

Outside Pen for the Cavaliers

Sooty

Sooty

Now that Sooty has left for his new home, we have an empty pen we can use.  Yesterday we switched Spirit to Sooty’s old pen and put all the cavaliers in the big pen for a couple of hours.  It was a fine day, and they were really good, no serious barking, and when they came in, they all fell fast asleep – obviously the fresh air had done the trick!

I think that it might be good for them to have just a few hours in the pen each day, certainly on good days, and then if we go out for the day, Aunty Kate at Step in, can come and allow them all out.  It will make life a little easier for us too!

Spirit and the new Cavaliers – Update

Honey with Drummer

Drummer, as he is now called and Honey, our recent additions to the Heronbank “Pack” are settling in well.  They have been introduced to Spirit our Border Collie.  She can be a bit nippy around dogs she doesn’t know, so has been wearing her muzzle for an hour or two each evening until she gets used to them.  Last night, when everyone had more or less settled down in the lounge, I unclipped her muzzle and removed it.

Spirit

Spirit

Sensibly, she moved away from the other dogs and took herself into the kitchen, returning later, to lie by the lounge door.  No-one hassled her and she left everyone alone.  Progress indeed!  Drummer even sniffed at her, and she turned her back, and lay down. What a good girl!  The pups can walk past her without any problem so I think the pack has been integrated!

Only 2 Puppies Left for Sale now

Potential new owners for our Cavalier King Charles puppies have been flooding in, so we now just have 2 puppies left, the black & tan boy and a ruby girl.  At just 4 weeks old, they won’t be ready to leave us until the first week in June, they still have some growing to do.  We are worming them for the first time, using Panacur Paste, – a course of 3 days, followed by the same again, 7 days after the first course ends. This will continue until they are ready to leave us.

Mum Cyda doesn’t really want to go in and feed them much now, after all they have teeth, so who can blame her!  The puppies are now starting to take food for themselves, so it won’t be long until they won’t need mum at all.  Cyda has done really well for them, six puppies are a big litter for a cavalier.

Chicken Rescue at Farplace Animal Rescue

Whilst we were at Farplace Animal Rescue, Wearside, yesterday, we could not help but notice the number of hens, many of whom were rescued from battery farms which were closing.  Unsurprisingly, when they came in, they were in a sorry state, many in need of time in a heated unit before going out to the barn, sporting pullovers, knitted for them by animal lovers.

However, I could not help but notice how good the hens were yesterday, bodyweight, plumage and attitude.  They came running up from their barn to greet us and were obviously very happy hens.  Jan still has some hens and cockerels for adoption, so if you can adopt some as pets, please contact her.  They are laying well, so if you would like to buy some freshly laid eggs, definitely free range, then ask Jan.  Please bring your own egg boxes.

The Miracle of Maggie

We were privileged yesterday to visit Farplace Animal Rescue in Weardale.  The tiny bundle of fur, which was Maggie, had the odds so stacked against her when she was found and taken to Farplace, that it is indeed a miracle she survived.  She had every type of parasite, from fleas and ticks, to several different types of worms.  She also had multiple fractures to her leg.

During the time taken to nurse Maggie back to health, and it was touch and go for a long time, she became so tame that she is sadly unable to be rehabilitated to live a natural life in the wild.  Instead Maggie stays in a day-pen at Farplace with a squirrel in the next pen for entertainment and bird feeders outside the window to amuse her.  At night, she goes home with her carer.  She goes for walks on a double harness and is curious about everything.  She is being introduced to as many different people as possible, so that one day she can be used in an education program for youngsters, who are the adults of the future, and need to learn about protecting and caring for animals, domestic and wild.

Sooty has a new home!

Sooty, the rescued cat, has issues with other animals.  He has therefore been very difficult to place in a new home.

Sooty - on arrival

Sooty - on arrival

When Sooty came in it was the really cold winter of 2010/11.  Sooty was surviving the best way he could, in a draughty, freezing, concrete stairwell of a block of flats.  He had been abandoned and was begging for food at every door.  He was very thin and had multiple bites to his head and neck, which had abscessed.  He also had fleas, worms and ear mites.

We nursed him back to health and it was then that we noticed his issues with other animals – and humans!  This was most likely to have been caused by his bad experiences.

Sooty

Sooty - fully recovered

So, Sooty was kept in a pen in my garden, safe and secure, and well fed – until today.  We were fortunate enough to be contacted by Jan from Farplace Animal Rescue Centre in Weardale.  In the days when I was doing puppy Rescue, Jan was my right arm.  We worked side by side for a number of years.  As time went by, Jan moved to Weardale and we lost touch.  In the course of e-mailled conversations, I mentioned Sooty to her, and she had a free pen, so agreed to take him.  He will be going on Friday of this week.

Ideally, he would be happy in a warehouse, barn or similar, where he could do his own thing and receive regular meals, and when the work on the renovation of the old barn at Farplace is completed, that’s where he’ll stay and be well cared for.

Farplace do a great job and are always grateful for Donations and Support.
