Cyda’s pregnancy is progressing well
She is now in the early stages of labour. She is starting to pant heavily and her digging is more enthusiastic, if somewhat spasmodic. I have trimmed the fur on her ears shorter as puppies tend to play “knit one, purl one” and can get mum’s ears in a dreadful mess. I will shortly be trimming the fur around each nipple for the same reason, and also to make it easier for the pups to feed. Cyda‘s collar will be removed when the pups are born as the pups can wriggle under the collar, and if mum stands up, the puppies could drop and be hurt.
Our next job is to scrub and disinfect the dog room in preparation for the puppies and prepare a heat pad and bed for them, also to prepare a small box with blankets and microwavable heat pads for use during whelping. We will also cover an old leather chair with black bin-liners (this is where we would prefer her to whelp – being a first time mum she will not know this!). We will keep 2 bags out and ready for use – one for disposable waste, excess afterbirths, tissue etc, and one for washable waste, towels, blankets etc – These will be taped to the arms of the chair. A good supply of kitchen roll, towels and blankets will need to be on hand too as I change these after the birth of each puppy.
