I was readling lately that almost ¾ of UK butterfly species have declined over the last decade, bees too are not as numerous as they used to be. Apparently a study by Butterfly Conservation and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology indicate that even common species are down by 21% and 72% of all species are reduced in their abundance and distribution.
Research suggests loss of suitable habitats is the main cause of the decline. In March 2010, the celebrated television presenter, Sir David Attenborough, sounded the alarm that butterfly loss has become a global problem, with species disappearing in every continent.
A feeder for butterflies and bees can be obtained from the Eden Project.
There are also a number of shrubs and plants which provide a suitable habitat for bees and butterflies, but we can discuss these another day.
