Just a couple of pics of Olive on her morning walk.
Just how do you get a puppy to sit still long enough to be photographed?

Sometimes it is impossible to take your pet away on your long-awaited and hard-earned holiday. So what can you do to make their separation from you as kind as possible. Whether you ask a family member or friend to care for your beloved pet, or whether you seek the professional help of a boarding kennel or pet-sitter, your pet may become stressed when you are away.
The DAP (Dog Appeasment Pheromone) spray or plug in diffuser is excellent for calming unsettled or stressed dogs. It releases pheromones into the room, and although odourless to you, will have an amazing effect on calming your dog at times of stress.
A more extreme case is Toby who suffers from Separation Anxiety when my sister Janet is not with him. He whines constantly and works up to a howl if his behaviour not addressed. Whilst Toby has to accept that Janet cannot be his constant companion, we try to make his times of separation as pleasant as possible. Distraction techniques when Janet leaves, eg being taken into the back garden or given his favourite chew, do help, but he waits for her to return, looking out of the window from his vantage point on the back of the settee.
Holiday times need the DAP spray.
A few sprays onto his bedding in the morning will calm him down and his whining does not escalate. Night-times are a different matter. He would whine all night if he was not allowed in the bedroom, where he soon settles at the foot of the bed. I do not advocate dogs sleeping with humans as a general rule, but in this case, believe me, it is the only way to get some sleep!

Relatives of mine who live in Alberta have a small dog-sitting business.
They sent me this!!! Totally genuine.
Yes, I know it’s not a puppy but it’s a good story!
Well last week we expanded our dog sitting services. One of the school families where I work, have a large hog operation. Sow R had a litter with a runt who was not expected to live long so they let their 5 yr old daughter bring him to school. One of the grade three teachers heard about piglet ‘R’ and decided she had to save him. By noon she named him Ronnie, contacted her father who farms in southern Alberta, and bought piggy formula. Some of us started calling her Fern (the girl from Charolettes Web). The grade 3 teacher now had a new pet. Ronnie was a real hit at school and it was even suggested that he could be the school masquet. Last Thursday the teacher had to go to a school function and years ago Rob had wanted a pet pot bellied pig so we offered to take Ronnie for the evening. We quickly learned his signal for when he needed to go outside and when he was hungry. The week before when Ronnie arrived at the school he was 1 lb. and we all wondered how he was doing so Rob weighted him. He was now just under 4 lbs. He followed us around the house and ran around the island in the kitchen. Some of our neighbours met him too and thought he was pretty cute.

Fin has, this week, just started taking his homoeopathic medications.
He immediately flared up, his skin became red and itchy and he couldn’t help but scratch. This lasted until lunch-time.
Whilst it is distressing both for Fin and for anyone who sees him, it’s actually a good sign and means that the medications are working. It’s known as Vicaration. It’s a “getting worse before it gets better” and once we have got through this stage, which hopefully should last only a few days, we should then start seeing an improvement.

Skully managed to get half a cup of cold coffee yesterday evening – seemed to enjoy it too.
However, instead of settling down on my knee to watch TV or have a snooze as she usually does, she went totally hyper-active. She was naughty with it too, trying to bite cables, jump on Fin and Cyda, pull things off my coffee table.
There was no rest. She would be distracted with chewy toys but only for a minute, then off to find some more mischief.
Thank goodness she settled down before bed-time! No more coffee for Skully – ever!!!
Paws for thought … If coffee does that to a puppy, what does it do to us? I might switch to de-caf!

Fin‘s new homoeopathic remedies have arrived from Charles Barrett at Betic Health & Beauty (Int) Ltd. See link on the side panel to the right of this page.
There’s one to boost his immune system, one for dust mites and yeast allergies, and one for the bacteria on his skin.
We should see an improvement in a month or so.

Harvey, as he is now known, is settling in to his new home and eating well. All the family are besotted with him.
He has an older friend – Lara – a rescued bitch, who has taken him under her paw, teaching him what he can and cannot do.
He seems to really enjoy all the smells and other dogs and people that he keeps meeting. Everyone has to stop and say hello – Harvey has no problem at all with that!
